Question 1

What is the best dolphin tour on Tybee Island?

Accepted Answer

There is no single dolphin tour that is best for every traveler. Compare operators based on price, trip duration, departure location, boat size, schedule, accessibility, and whether the itinerary focuses on dolphins or broader wildlife viewing. Also check current cancellation and weather policies. Your group size and preferred departure time can help narrow the options.

Question 2

How much does a Tybee Island dolphin tour cost?

Accepted Answer

Tybee Island dolphin tour prices vary by operator and trip type. Captain Derek currently lists daytime tickets at $34.95 for adults and $22.95 for children ages 3 to 12, plus tax. Its sunset rates are $44.95 for adults and $29.95 for children. Other operators may charge different prices, so check current rates before booking.

Question 3

How long is a Tybee Island dolphin tour?

Accepted Answer

A Tybee Island dolphin tour commonly lasts around 1 to 1.5 hours, although the exact duration depends on the operator and itinerary. Captain Derek currently lists its Dolphin Adventure at approximately 1 to 1.5 hours. Other operators may offer 90 minute trips or different schedules. Check the current tour duration before planning activities around your departure.

Question 4

Can you see dolphins on Tybee Island?

Accepted Answer

Yes, wild bottlenose dolphins live in coastal and estuarine waters around Tybee Island. Georgia's official tourism information identifies the Georgia coast as a place to see wild bottlenose dolphins. A boat tour can provide opportunities to observe them in their natural environment, but their location and behavior change throughout the day.

Question 5

Are dolphin sightings guaranteed?

Accepted Answer

No, dolphin sightings cannot be guaranteed because these are wild, free-ranging animals. Tour crews can search areas where dolphins are commonly seen, but they cannot control their movements. Weather, tides, food availability, vessel activity, and other natural conditions can affect sightings. A responsible tour should focus on observing dolphins without chasing or disturbing them.

Question 6

What is the best time for dolphin watching on Tybee Island?

Accepted Answer

There is no proven single time that guarantees better dolphin sightings on Tybee Island. Morning and afternoon tours can both provide wildlife viewing opportunities. Weather, tides, seasonal conditions, and dolphin behavior can affect the experience. Choose a departure based on your itinerary and preferred conditions, rather than expecting a specific time to guarantee more sightings.

Question 7

Are Tybee Island dolphin tours good for children?

Accepted Answer

Many Tybee Island dolphin tours accept children, but family policies vary by operator. Captain Derek currently lists its Dolphin Adventure as suitable for all ages and publishes separate child rates. Other operators may have specific age or life jacket requirements. Parents should check boat movement, tour length, restroom access, accessibility, weather policies, and child safety rules before booking.

Question 8

Are there sunset dolphin cruises on Tybee Island?

Accepted Answer

Yes, some Tybee Island operators offer sunset trips that include dolphin watching. Captain Derek currently lists sunset pricing for its Dolphin Adventure. However, not every sunset cruise is a dolphin tour. Check the current itinerary before booking if dolphin watching is important to you. Departure times change during the year because sunset occurs at different times.

Question 9

Can you take a dolphin tour from Savannah?

Accepted Answer

Yes, you can visit Tybee Island from Savannah and take a dolphin tour as part of a day trip. Tybee is roughly 18 to 20 miles from downtown Savannah, depending on the starting point. Most travelers arrange their own transportation to the tour dock. Allow extra time for traffic, parking, and check-in before departure.

Question 10

Where do Tybee Island dolphin tours depart?

Accepted Answer

Departure points vary by operator, so check the exact meeting location when booking. Captain Derek's Dolphin Adventure currently lists its departure location at 3 Old US Hwy 80 on Tybee Island. Other operators may use different docks or waterways. Confirm the address, parking arrangements, and check-in instructions before traveling to the island.

Question 11

Do Tybee Island dolphin tours run in bad weather?

Accepted Answer

Tybee Island dolphin tours may be canceled, rescheduled, or changed when weather or water conditions are unsafe. Policies vary between operators. Strong winds, storms, rough water, and poor conditions can affect operations. Check the operator's current weather and cancellation policy before booking. Do not assume that a tour will operate simply because the forecast looks acceptable earlier in the day.

Question 12

Should you book a Tybee Island dolphin tour in advance?

Accepted Answer

Booking ahead is useful during summer, weekends, holidays, and other busy travel periods because popular departure times can fill. Advance booking also helps if you need a specific time or accessible boat. Flexible travelers may find availability closer to departure during quieter periods. Always check the current cancellation policy before making a nonrefundable reservation.
